About Door Chimes UK

Independent doorbell advice and information for UK homes since 2004.

Our Story

Door Chimes UK started in 2004 as an online retailer selling doorbells and door chimes to customers across the United Kingdom. For years, we shipped Byron, Friedland, and other popular brands from our base in Sheffield, building up a solid understanding of what worked well in British homes and what did not.

Over time, the retail landscape shifted. The big online marketplaces made it difficult for small specialist shops to compete on price, and we found that the most valuable thing we offered was not the products themselves but the knowledge that came with them. Customers would ring up or email asking for advice — which doorbell suits a thick stone wall, whether they need an electrician for a wired system, how to fix a chime that had gone quiet — and we were happy to help.

In the end, we made the decision to step away from retail and focus entirely on what we do best: providing honest, practical doorbell advice based on real experience. Door Chimes UK is now an independent information resource. We do not sell doorbells and we do not take commissions from manufacturers. The guidance on this site is written to help you make a good decision, not to push you towards a particular product.

Who Writes the Content

The articles, guides, and reviews on this site are written by James Whitfield and a small team of contributors, all based in the UK. James has been involved with Door Chimes UK since its founding and has hands-on experience with hundreds of doorbell models over the years. The advice you find here comes from actually fitting, testing, and troubleshooting these products — not from reading spec sheets and rewriting marketing copy.

What We Cover

We write about every type of doorbell available to UK consumers: traditional wired chimes, wireless doorbells, smart video doorbells, and specialist products for people who are hard of hearing. Our guides help you choose the right type for your home, and our blog tackles common questions and problems.

We also cover the practical side — installation, troubleshooting, and wiring — because a doorbell is only useful if it is fitted properly and working reliably.
